Bret Ferrell

Bret Ferrell is the managing partner and clinical director of Bay State Physical Therapy in Beverly, Salem and Reading.  Prior to opening the Beverly clinic in 2009, Bret was the clinical manager of Bay State Physical Therapy in Weymouth.

Bret specializes in a hands on approach to treatment of injuries to the spine and extremities.  Using spine and extremity joint mobilization techniques along with incorporating gym exercise programs has allowed Bret’s patients to achieve maximum benefit from their rehabilitation.  His experience playing soccer on the local and state levels has fueled his passion for sports medicine and helping all of his patients return to function.  Bret also enjoys giving community lectures on a wide variety of topics including: management of low back pain, ACL prevention in the adolescent athlete and shoulder rehabilitation of the throwing athlete.

Bret is married with 2 children.  Along with spending time with his family, Bret enjoys coaching his children’s sports teams, playing basketball and soccer, running in local road races and following Boston sports.

Mat Procopio

Mat specializes in Sports Medicine and the treatment of low back pain, as well as orthopedic post-operative patients.  He has a particular interest in total joint replacements and ACL reconstruction.  He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Health Science as well as his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Boston University. Mat enjoys weight training and recreational sports such as basketball and racquetball.  He utilizes his exercise background in addition to a variety of manual therapy techniques to reduce pain and improve function in his clients.

Mat is the Clinical Manager and sees patients in our Beverly clinic Monday through Saturday.

Mat remains active and enjoys running and working out.  He plays in a basketball league at the Reading YMCA twice a week.  He enjoys relaxing with friends and family, and cheering on the local teams, especially BU hockey.

Melissa Berkowitz

Melissa earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Melissa's clinical background includes outpatient orthopedics with an emphasis on manual treatment of neck and back pain. She believes in combining manual therapy with therapeutic exercise to help clients achieve their rehab goals. Treatment plans are personalized for each individual. Melissa also integrates patient education into all treatment sessions with the hope that clients may better understand their diagnosis and prevent future injury.

Melissa is a long distance runner and enjoys training for local races. She is also an avid Boston sports fan and likes to travel to different cities to cheer on the Bruins!

Alyssa Williamson

Alyssa received her Bachelors of Science degree in Athletic Training and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree at Boston University. She grew up playing soccer and running track, competing at both the state and national levels. In her professional experiences, Alyssa has worked with adults of all ages and activity levels, from babies to professional athletes. In the clinic she specializes in sports medicine, pediatrics and aquatic therapy. Alyssa utilizes her knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics and function with a combination of manual therapy techniques and individualized therapeutic exercise plans to help patients achieve their rehabilitation goals. She believes patient education is a key element of helping people understand their injuries and avoid recurrence in the future. Alyssa is also a certified strength and condition specialist, which allows her to advise patients, specifically athletes, on improving functional performance. 

Alyssa can also be found working as an athletic trainer at local middle and high school athletic competitions. She also teaches a strength and balance class every Friday morning at the Beverly Council on Aging. Outside of work, she enjoys being active and spending time with her family and friends.

Rachael Mullen

Rachael earned her bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Simmons College. Her clinical background was focused in the outpatient treatment of patients of all ages. She specialized in treating shoulder injuries especially post-op rotator cuff repairs.

Rachael has always been an avid swimmer and competed for four years at Simmons College where she captained her senior season. Her swim career started at the Sterling Center swimming for the YNS Sharks. Professionally, Rachael aspires to use her knowledge of swimming and athletics to offer a new outlook on recovery.

Outside of work, she has continued to share her love of swimming and her exercise science background to help teach swimming both lessons and competitively for the past two years. After living in the city she also has a strong love for all Boston sports, especially the Red Sox.
