Bay State Physical Therapy Announces Benjamin Marceau as the 2023 Bay State Physical Therapy Comeback Player of the Year

Bay State Physical Therapy, the Official Injury Prevention Partner of the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association, is proud to announce Benjamin Marceau has been named the 2023 Bay State Physical Therapy Comeback Player of the Year. Ben, a dedicated fourteen-year-old soccer player from Wakefield Red Bulls (of the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association) and Aztec Soccer Club, demonstrated remarkable resilience and perseverance in overcoming a challenging injury to return to the sport he loves.

Ben’s Injury and Diagnosis

In the fall of 2022, Ben began experiencing pain in his right knee. Initially, it was thought to be growing pains, but as the pain persisted, further medical evaluation revealed that Ben had Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD). This condition, which involves a fragment of bone and cartilage breaking loose in the joint, requires immediate and careful attention.

Dr. Brendon Heyworth at Children’s Hospital Waltham diagnosed Ben and recommended a non-surgical approach and outpatient physical therapy. Ben’s treatment plan included wearing a brace for six weeks, followed by a gradual return to low-impact exercises under the supervision of his physical therapist.

The Road to Recovery

Ben’s recovery journey was supported by the skilled team at Bay State Physical Therapy in Saugus, MA. Bret Ferrell, PT, MSPT, CSCS, Managing Partner at Bay State Physical Therapy-Saugus, Swampscott, Salem, and Beverly described Ben’s approach to his recovery:

“Ben stood out with his energetic and outgoing personality. From his first day in the clinic, he was engaged with the entire staff and always receptive to increased challenges. Despite multiple rounds of imaging, some of which did not come back with positive news, he continued to work hard at his physical therapy sessions and every day on his home exercise program.”

Bret emphasized the importance of creating a care plan specific to each athlete’s unique needs, including sport-specific exercises and education. For Ben, this meant starting with non-weight-bearing leg strengthening exercises and slowly and carefully progressing to dynamic, soccer-specific drills.

Overcoming Adversity

Being sidelined from soccer was a significant challenge for Ben. “I have learned a lot about the ups and downs of life, but more than anything, not to let the downs keep you down and that you must choose to persevere to get better,” Ben reflected. His determination and positive attitude were evident throughout his recovery process.

Ben’s father, Roger Marceau III, who nominated him for the award, shared insight into the mental and emotional impact of the injury on Ben. “Having soccer taken away from him during this critical developmental period as a teenage athlete was difficult on him. To Ben’s credit, he never gave up and trusted his healthcare team’s advice during his recovery.”

Ben’s support system, including his parents, teammates, family, and friends, played a crucial role in his journey. Even when he couldn’t play, Ben remained a dedicated team member, attending every practice and game to support his teammates from the sidelines.

A Triumphant Return to Action

Cleared to play this winter, Ben is back on the field with renewed strength and valuable life lessons. “I have learned about discipline and to never give up on myself,” Ben said, looking forward to his future in soccer. These lessons will undoubtedly serve him well in his future athletic endeavors.

Ben’s perseverance and dedication have made him a role model for other young athletes facing similar challenges. His story exemplifies the importance of injury prevention, timely and effective physical therapy, and the power of a positive mindset.

Bay State Physical Therapy is honored to have been a part of Ben’s recovery journey and is thrilled to recognize him as the 2023 Bay State Physical Therapy Comeback Player of the Year. Ben’s story is a testament to the importance of a positive spirit and a comprehensive team approach to healthcare in overcoming sports injuries.
