What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis refers to inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue on the underside of the foot, connecting from the heel to the ball of the foot. Plantar fasciitis typically occurs from tightening of the tissues under the foot. In addition, changes in the foot’s shape, such as fallen arches or wearing unsupportive shoes, can cause plantar fasciitis.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Plantar fasciitis can affect anyone but is more common in people on their feet, like runners or those with jobs requiring standing for long periods, such as nurses or physical laborers. Other risk factors include:

  • Age, typically between 40 and 60 years.
  • Certain types of exercise, like long-distance running, ballet dancing, or aerobic dance, that place a lot of stress on the heel.
  • Foot mechanics, including having a high arch, flat feet, or abnormal walking patterns.
  • Tightness in the Achilles tendon.
  • Obesity, which puts extra stress on the plantar fascia.

These factors contribute to the gradual wear and tear of the fascia, leading to the pain characteristic of plantar fasciitis.

Your Care at Bay State Physical Therapy

Your physical therapy care will begin with a personalized evaluation. We’ll ask you questions about your medical history, when your pain started, and what makes your symptoms better and worse. From there, your physical therapist will perform several tests and measurements to set a baseline for your care. Understanding the activities that cause pain and what you are unable to complete comfortably will be an essential focus during your care. With our patient-centered approach to physical therapy, you will fully understand what is being done and why. Some of what you may participate in could include:

  • Stretching exercises to improve the mobility of the Achilles tendon and other calf muscles.
  • Strengthening exercises to build muscle in the calf and foot.
  • Applying ice to reduce pain.
  • Recommendations for proper footwear or orthotics to provide adequate support to your foot.
  • Education on lifestyle and activity modifications to prevent future episodes.
  • A home exercise program will help you remain well even after discharge.

Our physical therapists are musculoskeletal health experts committed to working with you to help you reach your optimal health.
